Dozens of Platforms in Europe Suing Google – 22 Billion of Compensation Requested
Google, the search engine owned by Alphabet Inc., is being sued by dozens of websites across the European Union, according to a Bloomberg News review. The platforms are seeking a total of 12 billion euros in damages. The plaintiffs accuse Google of stealing users.
The plaintiffs include price comparison platforms that help consumers find the best product prices. The civil lawsuits obtained by Bloomberg are related to a 2017 European Commission decision that fined the company 2.4 billion euros for violating antitrust laws.
The European Commission’s decision was quickly followed by a wave of lawsuits. However, their consideration was postponed because Google filed an appeal with an appeals court seeking to overturn the fine, which was unsuccessful. Currently, according to Bloomberg News, 12 civil cases are pending against Google in seven European countries. According to the publication, if the allegations are proven, the search engine must pay at least 12 billion euros.
According to Bloomberg News, among the platforms that are suing Google and demanding compensation for damages are: Idealo, Trovaprezzi, Pricerunneer, Kelkoo, PreisRoboter, etc. The company itself does not admit guilt in the civil lawsuits filed across Europe, nor does it name the amount to be paid for antitrust fines.
